Patients Right
1. Right to Care and a Safe Environment
- To receive necessary medical care based on patient’s health condition and the available resources of the hospital.
- To receive healthcare services in a safe environment maintained according to approved policies and procedures, free from discrimination based on race, gender, or nationality, and free from abuse or harassment.
2. Right to Information, Communication, and Participation in Decisions
- To know the identity of the healthcare team responsible for patient’s care, including the primary
physician, nurses and other members’ of the care team. - To be seen by the Consultant/treating doctor within 24 hours of admission and regularly thereafter.
- To receive sufficient information from the treating physician about their diagnosis, proposed treatment, potential benefits, drawbacks, alternatives, expected outcome and likelihood of success, all in simple and understandable language.
- To be informed of and participate in decisions regarding patient’s health care.
- To provide informed written consent, in simple and understandable language free from medical jargon, before any surgery, invasive procedure, or anesthesia, except in emergency situations requiring immediate action as per regulations.
- To be given sufficient time to understand the proposed treatment plan and provide informed consent.
- To refuse any part of their care after a thorough explanation of the potential risks, which must be documented in their medical record. The hospital and medical staff are not responsible for outcomes resulting from a patient’s informed refusal or discontinuation of treatment, or changes/withdrawal of consent.
- To have access to an interpreter if patient does not speak or understand the spoken language.
- To receive acknowledgement of treatment cost and getting invoice for any offered services.
3. Right to Privacy and Dignity
- To have all information obtained by healthcare providers and documented in their medical record kept confidential within the legal framework of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
- To request amendments to and obtain information on disclosures of his/her health information in accordance with law and regulations
- To request to be examined by a physician from the same gender (if available and if medical condition permits)
4. Right to Express Complaints and Seek a Second Opinion
- To express concerns regarding the quality or delivery of healthcare services by submitting oral or written complaints to the hospital administration without fear of affecting the quality of their care.
- To seek a second medical opinion from another healthcare professional within or outside the hospital without fear of compromising their current care.
5. Right to Continuity of Care and Discharge
- Receive continuous and coordinated care, including referrals to different levels of treatment if their condition requires it, and to request a transfer to another physician/facility.
- To receive timely emergency medical intervention without unnecessary delay.
- To obtain a medical report from their treating consultant. Please note that a fee may apply depending on the type of report requested. For inquiries, contact the Medical Records Department at 13101273 during office hours (8am to 9pm).
6. Patient or Guardian Responsibilities
- To provide all available information that is relevant to the patient’s medical condition and history, including any past hospitalizations, communicable diseases, allergies or medications used.
- To follow the agreed-upon treatment plan developed by the healthcare team.
- To adhere to the instructions for using prescribed medications and any recommended dietary plans.
- To accept full responsibility for refusal of treatment.
- To accept the consequence of failure to follow instruction given by the treating physician.
- To comply with the regulations for Outpatient, Inpatient, Surgery and Day Care services, including attending scheduled appointments or notifying the patient services at least 24 hours in advance if unable to attend.
- To behave appropriately and respectfully towards healthcare staff and to respect the rights and privacy of other healthcare recipients.
- To adhere to the hospital’s policies regarding personal valuables, which includes not bringing valuables for elective admissions and, if brought, immediately handing them over to family members for safekeeping, as the hospital will not be responsible for any loss.
- To ensure that authorized attendant complies with all hospital policies.
- Accept any financial obligations associated with the care provided.
- Respect the hospital policy for instruction on No smoking areas, prohibition of taking photos and cellular use in critical areas.
- Respect priority for emergency cases.
